Ever take the time from the helter skelter...

So, the last post left off a little abruptly - here's the end.

I've been spending a good deal of time w/ Blake, Erica, and Jeff, as well as good times with Lily, Neili, and Whitney. So, my social life is expanding, although I might need to tone it down a little now, as the end of the term is here and I really need to buckle down and work hard. Blake and I have finished the first season of "Battlestar Galactica" and are now watching "Star Trek: Voyager." I'm also now into "Futurama," "American Dad," "Family Guy," and "Project Runway." (Thanx, Erica.) And, speaking of Erica, she's such a sweetie, and so is Jeff, in his own way. Blake and I also spent this last Friday night recording this song ("Go Now in Peace") in his bathroom, which was turned into a recording booth. I loved every minute of it, including the bad oboe moments (damn reed), but it was great to finally get some experience. We (well, I rather) took a breather on Tuesday night to head down to Fry's Electronics store so he could spend his tax refund.

I also have a new group to add to my music library: Cantus. They're a male vocal group from St. Olaf College and have the best male sound I've heard. I recently got one of their albums, "Let Your Voice Be Heard," and am hoping to get the one the library has, "Introit." Thanx go to Blake for introducing me to them.

My week has suddenly become busier - Bill Powell and Kathy just asked me Tuesday to play in the Writing for Woodwinds class concert tomorrow, so I'm reading/rehearsing a bunch of pieces today. W e had a somewhat dramatic rehearsal last night, as well. It turns out that I'm actually performing most of the pieces that have oboe, and Kathy only has 2, but that's okay, as most of them are easy and just need some touching up. At least Allan is in New York until Monday...I don't have to worry about a lesson this week, but still need to practice my ass off since I've been slacking and for the fact that I'm performing in 3 concerts next week: Wednesday is Baroque, Thursday is Wind Class, and Friday is SCVYP. And, my final essay and research paper for Social Psych. is due on Tuesday morning, before noon in Vicki's box. So, I definately have my work cut out for me. And then, if I make it successfully through next week, I have a jury on the last Monday, as well as a theory exam on Thursday. One would think that the composition project and analysis paper would've been enough...grrrr... So, really, it's a roller coaster to the end of that week, when I start packing. I also should probably start shipping some stuff back home so I don't have so much to carry with me.

Oboe-wise, I'm having a reed crisis - all my reeds have been pretty crappy (not even making it to the refining stage), so I'm scrambling to make more - my box is full right now, and I honly have 2 that work and are playable. Bah!! Anyway, I'm hoping I'll strike diamonds, gold, silver, onyx, and sapphire with this next batch, as I can't afford to have bad reeds until the school year ends. Also of note in oboe land is the cutting of the Poulenc trio this term - a long story, but the end result is that Vicki Ray promised to perform it w/ Heather and I next term, so @ least we don't have THAT to worry about for the moment. We're also getting 3 new oboes in the fall, according to Allan. They are: a male grad. student from Canada (yay!), a lady from the Bay area who is sorta like Kathy, but not professional (she's apparentely taught over 1,000 students...), and a girl freshman from Interlochen. So, things should be pretty interesting, and I hope it all works out for the best. A more "active" oboe studio would be great.

Not sure what else to say...I miss the cats, I do want to go home for break, but also wish I could stay out here. I also need to find out whether I'm going to Idyllwild again or not.

More to come, though don't expect too much, too soon.
